One day course

Course Objective

To develop behaviours and techniques that will enhance the participants’ abilities in being effective influencers and building credibility in the workplace.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  Recognise how ‘personal brand’ impacts their effectiveness as an influencer

  Understand their preferred influencing style and its impact

  Apply a range of effective influencing strategies relative to their environment

  Understand the importance of planning to influence

  Demonstrate flexibility in their approach to influencing

  Deliver evidence based feedback and understand the concept of logical persuasion

Course elements

Personal Brand

In this opening session the group will explore personal brand and its role in creating credibility and confidence. Through practical examples and trainer led discussion, the group will look at the behaviours and attitudes that impact an individual’s personal brand.

Circles of Influence

Building on the first session, the participants will now identify with the things and people that can be influenced. The group will explore the impact of focusing attention on matters out of their control and recognise the associated feelings such as powerlessness, development of low self-esteem and shrinking the ability to influence.

Planning to Influence

It is crucial to understand the organisation that sits around you and even more important to identify both your champions and your competitors. By establishing your relationships and understanding how others prefer to operate, you can plan strategies for effective influencing within the organisation.

Delivering Difficult Messages and Effective use of Feedback

In this session we will identify the emotions involved for an individual when delivering difficult messages, as well as giving feedback. We will explore the impact of using a highly effective evidence based feedback tool.

Cave Rescue

This practical activity will force the group to influence one another. By individually having to make difficult decisions, they will then need to influence others to get on board with their approach. The debrief of this session will lead into an explanation of Thomas and Kilmann’s five distinct influencing styles, and the participants will link the strategies adopted in the task to practical application of the TKI tool (Thomas Kilmann Instrument).

TKI: Influencing Styles

Participants will be invited to complete a questionnaire in order to highlight their own natural and preferred influencing style. They will develop influencing flexibility by recognising the dangers of over or underuse of each of Thomas and Kilmann’s distinct influencing styles. The group will be asked to reflect on the previous task in order to recognise influencing styles in practice.

Influencing Strategies

There are nine common influencing strategies, each of which will be explored and where appropriate combined with one of the five TKI styles. This session demonstrates that there are many different ways to influence and it is the selection of both style and strategy that defines the outcome.

Event + Reaction = Outcome

Finally, now that the participants have explored a range of tools and techniques for being more effective in influencing they will apply their newly learned approach to a set of practical predesigned scenarios.

Action Planning

Action plans will be distributed at the beginning of the day and participants will be encouraged to update them throughout. At the end of the day the group will be given time to capture the learning points from the day.

We aim to have no more than eight participants on our management training open courses, allowing us to work through live scenarios with each individual making the experience as personal and tailored as we possible can.

We’re well aware how challenging it can be to implement new skills and techniques, so we offer ongoing (telephone and email) post course support by the trainer to anybody that attends one of our courses.
